Free App friday revival: Google Chrome

Well as a restart to the series I would like to introduce google chrome. I know that it isn’t bad but for me in everyday use it is a little bit too simple and lacks some of the ease of access to some functions. Plus I do have a little bit of a stigma from any browser that is associated with a company who does email addresses in addition to content production and delivery. Remember the days of AOL and MSN. They just carry a stigma for me. I know that many people like chrome though thus why I suggest giving it a try as it is fast and light.

I ordered my first book

I mean one that you actually sit down and read(It may not be my actual first but it has been at least 5 years since I voluntarily read one. I have bought books but not for entertainment in ages. I am really excited about it. Many would say since when have I gotten excited about a book. Well I guess it is now. Normally I read the Houston Chronicle and a couple of magazines. The book I ordered was “Divorce Your Car” to me it seems really interesting from what I have seen about it. I will let yall know how it is.

I guess one could say that my recent interest in bikes is good and bad for my health. I’ll talk about it more later though.

My Review of SR-60 Padded Folding Headphones

OneCall

The SR60s produce brilliant sound for a low cost. The SR60s have a flexible, soft vinyl headband. The headband and earpeices are connected by metal height adjusters, which adjust the height of your head with the center of your ear. These nifty adjusters also allow the earpiece to rotate a full …

Pros: Comfortable, Lightweight, Rich Sound, Good Bass

Cons: Grattle search for it

Best Uses: With My Computer, Portable Devices, Home Audio, Music

Describe Yourself: Audiophile, Frequent Traveler, Student

Primary use: Personal

I really like them. At first I was a little worried reading about comfort issues but my head is small and they fit perfect out of the box. Though I will admit that they aren’t comfortable to wear glasses with which most of this type aren’t. Other than that I like how not everyone has them compared to the bose things that everyone seems to have and they sound good to me.

Microsoft’s CEO ordered to testify in court

Today Steve Ballmer, Microsoft’s CEO was ordered to testify in court regarding the publicized case regarding the “Vista Capable” advertising campaign that Microsoft set up for computer manufactures. The issue with the case is that the requirements for being Vista Capable were too low and could only run the most basic version of Vista which is Basic. That was while they were also advertising all the new features of Vista that for the most part aren’t in Vista Basic like Aero. I knew about it some when I bought my laptop a few years ago and I can say that from my experience that most machines sold then would barely run Vista much less any reasonable distribution. I was in on the beta testing and I can say that Vista was a very heavy OS when in development requiring a lot of hardware. Some issues for example were the requirements allowing 1GB of ram. That on Vista is dreadfully slow compared to XP. Then “Vista Capable” machines were allowed to ship with graphics that couldn’t even run the Aero effect which was widely publicized and advertised. To get a Machine to run Vista decent at that time was about $1000 or a little more but they bent the rules in hopes of selling more units thus more copies of Windows. I know my laptop which is a HP DV5178 would do ok but it ran $1200 and I knew exactly what I was getting unlike most consumers that when you say video card they say “What?”. My laptop had at that point 1GB of ram a 1.66 Core Duo processor, Nvidia go7400 graphics and a 100GB SATA hard drive. I still think that the 1GB of ram would be iffy but I easily upgraded to 2GB for $20.

My views are kind of neutral but what I didn’t like were the uneducated salesmen that tried to sell anything without making the customer aware of such issues during that time. I find that even though what a customer really wants may not be in there budget but at least I feel they got the best solution and understand why it is the best for them. That doesn’t have to be real detailed but enough for them to feel good and to know what they are getting into. I find that they came back to me as well. Also eventually the sales people started coming up or asking me to come over and give better advice. I made a point though while at the computer store even though I was a customer I would chime in and help people out since half the time the salesman was clueless. There was nothing better than the feeling you got from knowing you helped someone get the right product and when you know that they will be happy for a longer period of time.

Free App Friday: Adeona

I came across it this week. It is a software that is similar to the lowjack system for laptops. It works in the same way after when it is stolen the computer will broad cast out and then it can be located through the IP address that it is sent from. Through knowing the IP address you can get down to the physical address at which the computer is located though the internet service provider as well as any police department should be able to help you with it. Best of all it is free.

Getting XP in the U.S. still, Apple climbing in the rankings

I found a link on it and it apparently isn’t that hard to get XP on computers even though at the end of last month Microsoft said they were going to stop selling it to consumers. How ever you can get it though the business divisions of most companies. To find out more check out this link.

Also it was found that Apple is now ranked third in the U.S. as far as computers with Dell still being on top and HP in second. One thing that gets me though is that Apple supports some policies similar to Microsoft’s.

A disgruntled employee locked SF out

A serious issue which is always threatening companies and rides on the back of many business manager’s minds. Apparently and disgruntled employee for the city of San Francisco decided to lock out everyone. Then the police got hopeful when he gave them false passwords and after that they arrested him on Sunday. I hope most companies recognize that they need to secure their systems after a person leaves by stopping there access to sensitive information. His bail is set at $5 Million. Even after being arrested as he has refused to turn over any valid passwords. The police have made slight headway in the fact that they have found limited access and are lucky that the system is still running at this point and they are still trying to regain full access. The system manages most of the cities important things like payroll management, confidential documents and the bookings for jail inmates.

A reason to keep your Microsoft system patched

I saw something that amazes me today and that I think is funny but at the same time a very serious problem. According to the Internet Storm Center says that the average life span of an unpatched-non updated system is 4 minutes.  Though I have to mention that that time is without a router or firewall on a broadband connection. That is not even enough time to get the system patched up as that can take several hours to fully download and install all of the updates now. Others however state that the computers can last up to 16 hours. To me that is still to close for comfort. So I guess it would always be best to start a computer up on a safe network to patch it and the patches are becoming more important than ever making it important that everyone stays on top of there updates.
